Twitter's free API has been finally shut down, causing many apps and websites to malfunction.
The company had previously announced its decision to cut off access to the free developer tools in early February, but the move was delayed without any updates. Last week, Twitter introduced its new paid API tiers, which seem to have caused the company to start cutting off thousands of developers who relied on its free tools.
Many app makers and services reported that the Twitter API is no longer functioning, while others are still trying to understand the changes. Third-party clients, a small fraction of the developers who relied on Twitter's APIs, were banned as part of the company's larger shakeup of its developer strategy.
Apps and websites that used Twitter's API to enable sharing of content to and from Twitter are now experiencing functional breakdowns. Twitter's bot developers are also impacted, with the monthly limit of 1,500 tweets deemed too limited for the new basic tier. The company has not communicated much with its developers about the changes and its press email auto-responds with a poop emoji
