Prominent AI experts and tech leaders have signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause on "out-of-control" AI experiments.
A new open letter has been published by the Future of Life Institute (FLI), signed by tech leaders and prominent AI researchers, calling for a six-month pause on "out-of-control" AI experiments.
The letter highlights the risks involved in the current race to produce the most advanced AI technology and the need for greater consideration of safety. Signatories include Steve Wozniak and Elon Musk, who have previously expressed concerns about AI safety, and other global AI leaders such as Marc Rotenberg, Max Tegmark, and Yuval Noah Harari.
The letter specifically references the GPT-4 model by OpenAI, which is being used by companies like Microsoft and Google to power complex chat systems. The letter warns that AI labs and companies need to immediately pause their work beyond GPT-4 and allow people time to adjust and ensure the safety of AI systems.
This call for a pause feels like the next step from a 2022 survey of over 700 machine learning researchers, in which nearly half of the participants stated there's a 10 percent chance of an "extremely bad outcome" from AI, including human extinction. When asked about safety in AI research, 68 percent of researchers said more or much more should be done.
Anyone who shares concerns about the speed and safety of AI production is welcome to add their name to the letter. However, new names are not necessarily verified, so any notable additions after the initial publication are potentially fake.
Let's join forces to ensure that AI is developed safely and responsibly. We need to ensure that AI benefits everyone and does not pose a risk to human existence. Share this message with your friends and colleagues to spread awareness about this important issue.
