Instagram Now Lets You Fast-Forward Reels Just Like TikTok

Date: March 28, 2025

Instagram adds 2x speed playback to Reels, letting users fast-forward videos just like TikTok, finally giving control to viewers.

If you're the type to scroll past Reels the moment they drag, Instagram’s latest update might just be what you've been waiting for. The platform now lets users fast-forward videos on Reels — a long-requested feature that TikTok fans will instantly recognize.

Instead of sitting through all three minutes of a slow skincare routine or a stretched-out storytime, you can now zip through Reels at 2x speed by simply holding down on the right side of the screen. Want to rewind or slow things down? Just hold the left side. It's fast, fluid, and feels like a no-brainer addition.

The feature, first spotted by creators and later confirmed by Instagram, is currently rolling out globally. You’ll need to update your app to the latest version to access it.

Why Now?

Meta says the move was driven by user demand, and let’s be honest, attention spans aren’t exactly getting longer. Previously, a spokesperson told Mashable:

"We’re working on new ways to improve the Instagram Reels experience and are currently testing the ability to playback a reel in 2x speed. This is testing with a small group of people to start."

Instagram recently increased the maximum length of Reels to three minutes, putting them in direct competition with TikTok’s longer-form content. With that expansion came a need for better navigation — and playback speed controls were an obvious next step.

Familiar, But Useful

TikTok has had fast-forward controls for a while now, so Instagram’s addition isn’t exactly revolutionary. But for users heavily invested in the Reels ecosystem, it’s a welcome catch-up.

Whether you’re binge-watching life hacks, food hacks, or watching someone build a cabin in the woods, you now get to do it on your own terms — faster, if you like.

It’s another small but meaningful change as Instagram continues to evolve Reels to stay in the game. And if you’re wondering what’s next? Think smarter playback, maybe even customizable speed settings. Your thumb’s about to get a lot more power.
