Alibaba eyes an April release for Qwen 3, aiming to boost its position in China’s intensifying AI development race.
Alibaba may be about to make its biggest AI play yet.
According to multiple reports, the Chinese tech giant is preparing to release Qwen 3, the next evolution of its large language model, as soon as this month (April 2025). If confirmed, the release would mark a BIG step in Alibaba’s ongoing effort to catch up with global AI frontrunners like OpenAI and Google.
The news was first reported by Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. While a firm launch date hasn’t been publicly confirmed, the window is reportedly set for later in April.
It’s no secret that Alibaba has been ramping up its AI ambitions. In February, the company introduced Qwen 2.5-Max during the Lunar New Year — a move widely seen as a response to rivals like DeepSeek and Baidu. Now, with Qwen 3 in the pipeline, the stakes are even higher.
The company is staying tight-lipped, but expectations are rising fast. Just weeks ago, Alibaba unveiled QwQ-32B, a reasoning-focused model boasting 32 billion parameters. Despite its size, it was reportedly able to match or outperform larger models in reasoning tasks (a clear signal that Alibaba is aiming for efficiency, not just scale).
Behind the scenes, the pressure is mounting. China's AI race is heating up, and Alibaba is determined to stay competitive. With OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta all pushing the frontier with next-gen models, Chinese firms are feeling the squeeze to deliver not just alternatives — but genuine breakthroughs.
If Qwen 3 delivers on its rumored capabilities, it could be Alibaba’s ticket to reclaiming a leadership role in the global AI conversation. For now, the tech world waits — cautiously optimistic, and watching closely.
