AI Could Cure All Diseases Within a Decade, Says Google DeepMind CEO

Date: April 22, 2025

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis envisions AI curing all diseases within a decade, marking a major breakthrough for medical science.

Artificial intelligence may soon revolutionize medicine in ways previously thought impossible, potentially curing all diseases within the next ten years, according to Google DeepMind CEO and Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis.

Speaking at a recent conference, Hassabis laid out an ambitious vision for AI’s role in healthcare, predicting that new AI models will not just accelerate drug discovery but could even “cure all diseases with the help of AI."

“So on average, it takes, you know, ten years and billions of dollars to design just one drug. We can maybe reduce that down from years to maybe months or maybe even weeks.” Hassabis said, highlighting how platforms like DeepMind's AlphaFold have already cracked decades-old problems such as protein folding.

Hassabis’s optimism is shared by others in the AI community. Aravind Srinivas, CEO of AI company Perplexity, agreed with the bold forecast. In a social media post, Srinivas wrote, “Demis is a genius and he should be given all resources in the world to make this happen.”

At the heart of this transformation is the application of AI to predict molecular structures, simulate biological processes, and rapidly identify potential treatments — processes that would traditionally take years but can now be done in a fraction of the time.

According to Economic Times, DeepMind's AlphaFold has already mapped the structures of nearly every known protein — a breakthrough that has profound implications for understanding diseases at a molecular level. Building on this, DeepMind is working on AlphaFold 3, a next-generation system expected to further accelerate biological discoveries.

Still, experts caution that while AI holds massive promise, challenges remain. Drug approvals, clinical testing, regulatory oversight, and ethical concerns about AI's role in healthcare are critical hurdles that cannot be overlooked.

Nevertheless, the momentum is unmistakable. As AI technologies mature, they are increasingly seen not just as tools to assist doctors but as engines of discovery themselves.

As DeepMind and other research groups continue pushing boundaries, the once-distant dream of curing all diseases may be closer to reality than anyone dared hope.
